∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education’s Facility Committee learned Thursday playground improvements for Pied Piper School are on track.
Superintendent Scott Reynolds said the playground’s wood chips are going to be replaced with a poured-in-place surface, which will be easier for students in wheelchairs to navigate. He said a large part of the project’s funding comes from an Alpena Youth and Recreation grant.
Reynolds said the committee also heard a proposal to expand Pied Piper School’s parking lot to allow for a place to park the buses and a space at the school for the manager and dispatch. He said the manager and dispatcher currently work in the ESD’s central office and the buses are dispatched from Alpena Public Schools transportation facility on M-32 West.
“We’re looking not only at operational efficiencies but also some stronger partnerships, potentially, with our transition program possibly getting involved and helping to clean buses or do some other things with specialized trips,” he said.
Reynolds said it was a preliminary discussion and the committee will come back with questions in the future.
